Rolandina, a Merchant in Venice tells the story of Rolandina Roncaglia, who was born Rolandino (with an O) in 1327 in the countryside near Padua only to relocate to Venice in 1346, so that she could live as Rolandina, with an A. A merchant and a prostitute, Rolandina crossed the borders between genders at a time when secular and religious institutions were interdependent – just like today. The show is performed in English.
